Quick Thought | Go Ahead, Take The Easy Way Out!

We’ve all had someone try to dissuade us from giving up in a particular situation, by saying something like, “Quitting is the easy way out.”

I have to disagree.

Although it often feels like the easy way out in the moment, it’s anything but.

It’s easier today.

It’s easier right now.

But I promise you, that in the end, giving up proves to be the hard way. Every time.

Whether it’s the regret, hurt or consequences that we (and others) have to live with when we choose so-called shortcuts, or the time, energy and effort required to go back and fix things later, it’s never easier.

Doing the right thing, is always the right thing. But it’s also, it turns out, easier.

We’re tired and worn out. We’re drowning, hurting and just want our world to stop spinning. It’s then that we’re most vulnerable to the false hope that throwing in the towel promises to provide.

Quitting seems like the path to peace, comfort and happiness, but it never is.

The enemy of our souls knows that perseverance brings character; and character, hope. (Romans 5:3-5)

I suggest the opposite is also true. That giving up delays character and robs our hope.

That’s why he wants us to quit, walk away and lose hope. And precisely why we can’t.

In her song, Come Alive, Lauren Daigle nails it:
Through the eyes of men it seems there’s so much we have lost
As we walk down the road where all the prodigals have walked
And one by one, the enemy has whispered lies and led them off as slaves…

Let’s not believe those lies and empty promises. Let’s stop chasing easy. Let’s persevere, press on!

“So let’s not get tired of doing what is good. At just the right time we will reap a harvest of blessing if we don’t give up.
– Galatians 6:9

Side note: to be sure, there are things we should give up on. Like trying to earn out way to heaven, seeking perfection and a host of bad habits. But what God’s called us to do, what he’s told us to do through his word, the giants and “impassable” seas we find in front of us–may we never run from, be scared of, or quit on them. God’s got this.
